1848 - Satara kingdom came to end.

1896 - 1st modern Olympic Games officially opens in Athens.

1923 - Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, began the first regular production of balloon tyres for commercial use.

1930 - Mahatma Gandhi reached Dandi, a small coastal village in Gujarat, after travelling 385 km with 78 followers to break the recently imposed "Salt Law". This event is known as 'Dandi March' and was started from Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmedabad.

1933 - The first operation to remove a lung was performed at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri by Dr. Evarts Ambrose Graham. He was operating on a fellow physician with lung cancer. Until then, removal of a lobe of a lung was occasionally done to treat lung cancer, if a tumour was limited to one lobe. When exploration revealed this patient's cancer involved more than one lobe, he removed the entire lung. Seven ribs were removed to permit the soft tissues of the chest wall to fill the resulting cavity. The patient recovered and was cured of the disease. This was a triumph for the era that electrified the surgical world. Graham devoted many years to the study of lung cancer and its link to cigarette smoking.

1949 - Indian Boy Scout and Girl Guide were established and renamed as Bharat Scouts and Guides.

1950 - Spurred by recent clashes in East and West Bengal between Muslims and Hindus, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his Pakistani counterpart Ali Khan today reached agreement on a "Bill of Rights for Minorities". This bill included a provision for "drumhead justice," or summary justice to persons convicted of violating minority.

1957 - The first Communist ministry in a state was installed in Kerala.

1964 - Driverless trains first ran on the London Underground. Now, on the Victoria Line, once the Train Operator has closed the train doors and pressed the start buttons, the trains run automatically to the next station, responding to coded impulses transmitted through the track.

1979 - First Naval Museum of India established in Bombay.

2014 - Afghans show up at the polls in spite of potential violence to vote for their next president; this is the third such election since the 2001 removal of the Taliban from power.

2015 - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to speak out against the pending deal with Iran in which sanctions will be lifted in exchange for cuts in Iranian nuclear capacity; Netanyahu warns the pact may lead to nuclear arms acceleration.
