1775 - Joseph Priestley, having discovered oxygen on 1 Aug 
1774, experimented with mice in his home laboratory on whether it is necessary to support life.

1894 - New York passes 1st state dog license law.

1910 - Elise Deroche (Baroness de Laroche) became the first woman to be issued a pilot's license by the Aero Club de France. She had made her first solo flight in 1909.

1911 - 1st International Woman's Day. (International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Great unrest and critical debate were occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality were spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights).

1930 - Mahatma Gandhi starts civil disobedience in India.

1946 - First U.S. commercial helicopter license was issued to the New York Journal-American newspaper. The helicopter, Bell 47B was used for news gathering and delivering photographs.

1965 - 1st U.S. combat forces. 3,500 Marines arrive in Vietnam. (Direct U.S. military involvement ended on 15 August 1973. The capture of Saigon by the North Vietnamese Army in April 1975 marked the end of the war, and North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year).

1976 - The largest recovered single stony meteorite (1,774 kg) fell in Jilin, China, during a meteor shower that dropped more than 4,000 kg of extra-terrestrial rock.

1994 - B737 collides with Ilyushin-86 in New Delhi, at least 8 killed.

2015 - A report is released on the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370, one year after the incident, revealing that the flight's locator beacon battery had expired a year before the flight, but nothing unusual was otherwise detected. (Almost two years after the disappearance of the aircraft, the pilot, Mt Shah, suddenly surfaced on 20 Feb 2017. Now in the hospital, he does not remember anything including his name. Hopefully, as Mr. Shah recovers his memory, he should be able to bring answers to many questions concerning the 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 15 nations that were on board).

1921 - Sahir Ludhiyanvi, famous film lyricist. Sahir Ludhianvi is the pen name of Abdul Hayee who is popularly known as Sahir. Sahir was a poet and film lyricist who wrote in the Hindi and Urdu languages. His work influenced Indian cinema, in particular, Bollywood film. (He had an unfulfilled love relationship with Amrita Pritam).

1967 - Shankar Mahadevan, singer.

1975 - Fardeen Khan, actor.

1994 - Deepanshi Saxena, Advocate

1995 - Dr. Duranand Kanhan Pillai, great litterateur of Malayali language.
