1848 - Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, California. He was building a sawmill at Coloma on the American Fork River, to provide lumber for construction projects. His contractor made the first discovery of specimens of gold, which he showed to Sutter, who chemically identified it was gold. This initiated the California Gold Rush and during the next few years, thousands of people flocked to the area to search for gold. Some nuggets of gold in native metallic form were simply lying on the ground. More were found by panning streambeds, and later, increasingly technological mining methods were employed.  (As recently as 2011, the discovery in northern California of a 100-ounce gold nugget was reported).

1857 - The University of Calcutta is formally founded as the first full-fledged university in south Asia.

1899 - The first U.S. patent for a rubber heel was issued to Humphrey O'Sullivan. His patent described it as a "safety heel".

1900 - Newcastle Badminton Club, world's oldest, forms in England.

1924 - Russian city of St Petersburg renamed Leningrad; it was changed back in 1991.

1935 - 1st canned beer, "Kruger Cream Ale," is sold by American company Kruger Brewing Co.

1937 - Gandhi announces that he will retire from politics.

1948 - IBM dedicated its Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator . The "SSEC"  handled both data and instructions using electronic circuits made with 13,500 vacuum tubes and 21,000 relays. It occupied three sides of a 30-ft x 60-ft room.

1950 - The original microwave oven patent was issued to its inventor Percy LeBaron Spencer under the title "Method of Treating Foodstuffs." 

1950 - 'Jana Gana Mana....' was accepted as the National Anthem of the country.

1958 - After warming to 100,000,000 degrees, 2 light atoms are bashed together to create a heavier atom, resulting in 1st man-made nuclear fusion.

1966 - Indira Gandhi becomes Prime Minister of India. She continued in this office till March 24, 1977, after winning the General Elections. She became the only second woman in modern history to head a government.

1989 - 1st reported case of AIDS transmitted by heterosexual oral sex.

2014 - Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of the Apple Macintosh; the computer had a 9-inch monochrome display, 128 KB of memory and a 3.5" slot for a floppy disk.
