1661 - Isaac Newton admitted as a student to Trinity College, Cambridge.

1783 - The first hot-air balloon ascent - unmanned - flew for ten minutes. It was made by the French brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier at their hometown of Annonay.

1876 - Bananas become popular in the US, at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

1877 - The state of New York passed a law to tax on "oleomargarine."  The purpose was to protect dairymen and their product, real butter. (Margarine had first been created in France in 1870 by Hippolyte Mège-Mouriez in response to an offer by Emperor Louis Napoleon III for the production of a satisfactory substitute for butter). 

1882 - Storm & floods hit Bombay; about 100,000 dies.

1882 - John Mitchell Lyons, a railway clerk, was issued a Canadian patent for his "Improvements in Baggage Checks and Coupon Tickets". He devised this now familiar way to track and identify luggage. 

1937 - Henry Ford initiates 32 hour work week.

1944 - German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel goes on leave just before WWII D-Day landings by the Allies. ( On this day General Eisenhower also decides invasion date for June 6).

1977 - First personal computer, the Apple II, went on sale. It was the invention of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs.

1981 - An epidemic disease, later to be named as AIDS, was briefly described by Dr. Michael Gottlieb in the newsletter of the US Centres for Disease Control. This was the first notice to be published on AIDS, though it had not yet been given that name.  Despite the medical profession's refusal to acknowledge the AIDS crisis, Gottlieb pursued early immune deficiency cases and urged the publication of his findings.

1984 - Operation 'Blue Star' was launched. Army commandos stormed into Golden Temple in Amritsar to flush out the terrorists and other anti-government elements. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and over 325 people were killed in the temple.  

1989 - Missile `Trishul' tested successfully.

1994 - India test-fires a missile capable of reaching targets in China.

2013 - The first article based on NSA leaked documents by Edward Snowden are published by the Guardian Newspaper in the UK.

1973 - Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar, second Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was known to his friends and followers as ‘Guruji’. He nurtured the RSS into an effective and disciplined grassroots organization.
