Bill, which seeks to criminalise the practice of instant triple talaq (or 'talaq-e-biddat'), will be introduced in Parliament today

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will introduce the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights and Marriage) Bill that seeks to protect the rights of married Muslim women and prohibits "any pronouncement (of divorce) by a person upon his wife by words, either spoken or written or in electronic form, or in any other manner".

10 things to know about the Bill:

1. It is an important legislation which seeks to criminalise the practice of instant triple talaq, which enables Muslim men to divorce their wives instantly by saying 'talaq' three times in a row. There are many cases in which a talaq was given on phone or even via SMS, much to the agony of the Muslim women.

2. The bill proposes to make the triple talaq practice a punishable offence and describes it against "constitutional morality" and "gender equity". Anyone who pronounces instant divorce "shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and a fine", the bill proposes.

3. The Bill, prepared by an inter-ministerial group headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, makes instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat in any form - spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp - "illegal and void" and provides for a jail term of three years for the husband.    It was cleared by the Union Cabinet earlier this month.

4. As per the provisions of the Bill, the husband could also be fined and the quantum of fine would be decided by the magistrate hearing the case.

5. The Bill is being introduced as the practice still continued despite the Supreme Court striking down 'talaq-e- iddat'.

6. The proposed law would only be applicable to instant triple talaq and it would give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking "subsistence allowance" for herself and minor children. The woman can also seek the custody of her minor children from the magistrate who will take a final call on the issue.

7. The Supreme Court had termed the practice of instant triple talaq unconstitutional while considering a petition to that effect. The then CJI J S Khehar had directed the government to bring in a legislation in this regard. The Supreme Court judgement found wide support among the citizens, especially Muslim women who welcomed the criminalisation of the practice which made them suffer in family matters.

8.  Not everyone is happy with the criminalisation of instant triple talaq. Clerics and several Muslim organisations, cutting across sects and schools of jurisprudence, have opposed the Bill, terming the government's stand as "uncalled for interference" in the personal laws of the community.

9. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) opposed the legislation as it said that the legislation is against the Sharia law and may destroy families if made into a law. The AIMPLB has also alleged that due procedure was not followed while drafting the Bill and all stakeholders were not consulted in an effective manner.

10. Congress leader Salman Khurshid also hinted that he is opposed  to the Bill and hoped that the Congress party did not support it when it came in Parliament. Another Congress leader Kapil Sibal, who represented the AIMPLB in court, had alleged that the central  government is trying to diminish Islamic influence in the society.

SEE: Tiger Shroff flying off to celebrate New Year with Disha Patani's

If the grapevine is to believed, sparks flew between Tiger and Disha during the shooting of the music video of Befikra. While Tiger has repeatedly denied that something was brewing between him and Disha, he has gone on record to say that he wished he had a girlfriend like her.

It so happened that Tiger and Disha bumped into Ranveer Singh, who was also flying out of the country. Tiger decided to give up his spot, which was the last spot, on the electric shuttle for Ranveer, and sat on Disha's lap to make place for him.

Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani flew off last night to an undisclosed foreign destination to ring in the New Year together. A fan club of Disha's shared some interesting pictures from the airport, in which Tiger is seen sitting on Disha's lap.

It so happened that Tiger and Disha bumped into Ranveer Singh, who was also flying out of the country. Tiger decided to give up his spot, which was the last spot, on the electric shuttle for Ranveer, and sat on Disha's lap to make place for him.
However, Tiger and Disha's frequent appearances together, from parties to film screenings to dinner dates, paints a different picture altogether.

On the work front, the rumoured couple will be paired together for the first time on the big screen in Ahmed Khan's Baaghi 2. The film, which also stars Manoj Bajpayee and Prateik Babbar in pivotal roles, is scheduled to release on April 27, 2018.

PM says BJP MPs ignore his SMSes,asked them to start following the Narendra Modi app

Sources in the BJP quoted Modi as telling his MPs that they should follow the mobile app regularly. He said he often sends 'good morning' messages to his MPs, which is only seen or acknowledged by a handful of BJP MPs.

At the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting in New Delhi today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reported to have complained to BJP Members of Parliament that they ignore his text messages (SMSes), and has asked them to start following the Narendra Modi app.

The Narendra Modi app, launched on June 17, 2015, provides comprehensive information on the initiatives and achievements of the central government.
In August this year, Modi had warned the BJP MPs who don't attend Parliament that they may not get to contest the next Lok Sabha polls if they persist with the habit.

This is not the first time Modi has admonished his MPs, either for their performance or their attendance in Parliament.

Bitcoins Income-Tax notices to 4-5 lakh HNIs across the country

New  Delhi,18th Dec.Widening its probe into bitcoin investments and trade, the Income Tax (IT) department is set to issue notices to 4 to 5 lakh high networth individuals (HNI) across the country who were trading on the exchanges of this unregulated virtual currency.

The taxman had conducted surveys at nine such exchanges last week to check instances of tax evasion.

The department, official sources said, found that out of the estimated 20 lakh entities registered on these exchanges,  ..

As the bitcoins or the virtual currencies (VCs) are illegal and unregulated in the country as of now, the IT department has taken action as per the existing provisions, they said.

The survey operations conducted last week, under section 133 A of the Income Tax Act, were undertaken for "gathering evidence for establishing the identity of investors and traders, the transaction undertaken by them, identity of counter-parties, related bank accounts used, among others," they said.

Sources told PTI that the Bengaluru investigation wing of the tax department, which supervised last weeks operations, has now dispatched the information of the individuals and entities found on these databases to eight other such wings across the country for a detailed probe.

A survey action under the IT law pertains to the tax officials making a surprise visit to the business premises of the party under action but not their residential ones.

The trigger for the action is understood to be the huge spike being registered in the value of bitcoins and other virtual currencies in the recent past.

Suspected black money being converted into white, post demonetisation, through the use of bitcoins was also under the departments scanner, officials said.

Earlier this month, there was a spurt in the value of a bitcoin. It rose from under USD 10,000 at the start of the year to close to USD 20,000, before a sharp 20 per cent plunge within hours.

Bitcoin, a virtual currency, is not regulated in the country and its circulation has been a cause for concern among central bankers the world over for quite a while now.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also cautioned users, holders and traders of virtual currencies. The government has also said that it does not recognise crypto-currency as legal tender in India.

In March, the Union finance ministry constituted an Inter-Disciplinary Committee to take stock of the present status of virtual currencies both in India and globally and suggest measures for dealing with them.

The committee has submitted its report which is being examined.

Chartered Accountant (CA) of INDIA in great demand as UAE looks to implement VAT

Indian chartered accountants (CAs), who have gone through the rigour of interpreting and implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), dubbed the most complicated tax law, are in great demand in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Gulf countries these days. Their knowledge of Hindi has become an added advantage for Indian professionals, as many residents of the Gulf are comfortable with the language.

UAE will be introducing Value Added Tax (VAT) from January 1, 2018. This is similar to the GST, which came into force in India from July this year. After UAE, other Gulf countries will also be implementing the new tax. This has led to a demand for Indian experts to help businesses there understand the indirect tax system. In fact, Indian professionals find the tax in UAE much simpler than the Indian GST.

Chartered accountants from across the country, including Nagpur, are camping at UAE or making frequent trips there to help a host of clients understand the law. In Dubai alone, hundreds of Indian professionals have got assignments with demand for an equal number still there, said sources.

However, the VAT in UAE appears to be easier as compared to GST of India. There are no multiple schedules of rates. All taxable services or goods are charged at 5 per cent. There is a category of zero rate, besides exempt goods and services. Under zero rate category, the business need not pay tax but can claim input credit for the levy paid earlier. Schools are under zero rate, he said.
