1760 - The Battle of Wandiwash. It was a decisive battle in India during the Seven Years' War. The Count de Lally's army, burdened by a lack of naval support and funds, attempted to regain the fort at Vandavasi, now in Tamil Nadu. He was attacked by Sir Eyre Coote's forces and decisively defeated. The French general Marquis de Bussy-Castelnau and the French were then restricted to Pondichéry, where they surrendered on 16 January 1761. Wandiwash is the Anglicised pronunciation of Vandavasi.
1761 Third Battle of Panipat between the Marathas and Afghans is fought. (Between a northern expeditionary force of the Maratha Empire and invading forces of the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali, supported by two Indian allies—the Rohilla Afghans of the Doab, and Shuja-ud-Daula. The battle pitted the artillery and cavalry of the Marathas against the heavy cavalry and mounted artillery of the Afghans and Rohillas led by Abdali and Najib-ud-Daulah, both ethnic Afghans. In the battle that lasted for several days, the forces led by Ahmad Shah Durrani came out victorious after destroying several Maratha flanks).
1794 - Elizabeth Hog Bennett became the first woman in the U.S. to successfully give birth to a child by a Caesarean section. Her husband, Dr. Jessee Bennett of Edom, Va., performed the operation, though he had no anaesthetic to give her.
